my trip to Israel spring 2009

Desert farming
Did you know that green peppers are actually unripe? Peppers start green and become yellow, red, orange, chocolate colored or purple!!
If you pick a green pepper that started to change color (break color) then it will completely ripen in the next few days, right before your eyes!
Did you know that all this happens in a desert?

Did you know that the desert farmers raise clown fish (Nemo) to sell to aquariums, collector's, pet shops, etc. all over the world? They have 6 tanks and 100 fish in each tank!!! That is 600 fish!!! In this picture you can see the clown fish swimming around with others. It is not easy raising so many fish but it is possible for the talented farmers of the desert!!! Because they don't have much water they are trying to find ways to save water and raising clown fish doesn't use lots of water!!! It is amazing how much you can do in the dry desert!!!

On your next visit to Israel go see the Havat Yair (yair station) in the desert where things (expiremental farming) happen!!!
